Research Misconduct

Fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in proposing, performing, or reporting research: not honest error.

Federal policy defines research misconduct as fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism (FFP). It specifically excludes honest error and differences of opinion. Institutions must have policies to receive allegations and to conduct inquiries and investigations.

Findings can lead to funding-agency action, including repayment, debarment, and correction or retraction of the published record.

Why it matters

A misconduct finding can end a career and bar an institution's personnel from federal funding.
