Financial Conflict of InterestFCOI
A researcher's outside financial interest that could bias the research: disclosed, reviewed, and managed under sponsor rules.
An FCOI exists when an investigator's significant financial interests could directly and significantly affect the design, conduct, or reporting of funded research. PHS/NIH rules require investigators to disclose significant financial interests, the institution to determine whether a conflict exists, and the institution to manage or eliminate it.
Training and disclosure are required before spending, and identified conflicts must be reported to the sponsor and managed under a written plan.
Unmanaged or undisclosed conflicts are a serious compliance failure that can trigger sponsor action and retraction of results.
