Program Income

Income a project earns during its performance period: fees, sales, royalties, that usually must be reinvested in the project.

Program income is gross income a recipient earns because of the award while it's active: fees for services, sales of products made under the grant, or conference registration. The Uniform Guidance sets how it must be used: most commonly the additive method, where it's added to the award and spent on the same project.

Interest on federal advances, rebates, and discounts are specifically excluded. Program income has to be tracked and reported, usually on the financial report.

Why it matters

Unreported or misspent program income is an audit finding, and sponsors expect it to benefit the funded project.
