No-Cost ExtensionNCE

An extension of a grant's end date, with no additional funds, to finish the approved scope of work.

A no-cost extension pushes out an award's project-period end date so a recipient can complete the originally approved work using unspent funds. Many sponsors let the recipient approve a first extension (commonly up to 12 months) without sponsor sign-off; subsequent or longer extensions usually require sponsor approval.

An NCE must be justified by remaining programmatic work: not simply the desire to spend down a remaining balance, which sponsors scrutinize.

Why it matters

Extensions have their own deadlines (often requested before the end date) and can't be used just to park unspent money.
