Carryforward
Unobligated funds moved from one budget period into the next.
Carryforward (or carryover) is the unspent balance at the end of a budget period that a recipient carries into the following period. Depending on the award's terms, it may be automatic or may require sponsor prior approval, and large balances can prompt questions about progress.
Tracking carryforward accurately matters because it changes how much is actually available to spend in the new period beyond the newly awarded funds.
Unexpected large carryforward can trigger sponsor scrutiny and signal under-spending or stalled progress.
