Budget Period
The funded portion of an award, usually a year: for which money is committed and may be obligated.
An award's project period is divided into budget periods, typically 12 months. Funds are committed one budget period at a time, and continuation into the next period usually depends on an accepted progress report and the availability of funds.
Spending, carryforward, and reporting all key off the budget period, so knowing its exact start and end dates is basic to managing the award.
Most progress-report and carryforward rules trigger on budget-period boundaries, so the dates drive the calendar.
