Award Termination

Ending an award, in whole or part, before its planned end date: by the sponsor, the recipient, or by agreement.

An award can be terminated before completion: by the sponsor for non-compliance or changed priorities, by the recipient giving notice, or by mutual agreement. The Uniform Guidance sets out the grounds and the recipient's rights, and the award terms spell out the specifics.

Termination triggers an expedited closeout, final reports and financials for the shortened period, and raises questions about which wind-down costs are allowable.

Why it matters

A terminated award still has to be closed out properly, and generally only costs incurred before termination are allowable.
