Material Transfer AgreementMTA

An agreement governing the transfer of research materials between organizations, who may use them and how.

A Material Transfer Agreement sets the terms for sharing tangible research materials: cell lines, reagents, samples, software: between a provider and a recipient: permitted uses, publication rights, intellectual-property ownership, and liability. It protects both parties without transferring funding.

Even a simple sample exchange usually needs one, and they're negotiated by the institution, not the individual researcher.

Why it matters

Using transferred materials outside the MTA's terms can create IP and liability disputes that fall on the institution.
