Data Management & Sharing PlanDMP

The plan for how a project's data will be stored, shared, and preserved: now required by most federal sponsors.

A Data Management (and Sharing) Plan describes what data a project will produce, how it will be documented and stored, and how and when it will be made available to others. NSF has required one for years; NIH's Data Management and Sharing Policy made it mandatory for most awards in 2023.

Plans are expected to be specific about repositories, formats, timelines, and any costs, which can be budgeted as direct costs.

Why it matters

A missing or vague data plan can make an application non-compliant, and sharing commitments are enforced after the award.
