Senior/Key Personnel

The individuals essential to a project: named on the award, with changes requiring sponsor approval.

Senior/key personnel are the people whose expertise is central to the project, named in the application with committed effort and biosketches. The PI is always key; others are designated by role, not salary.

Because the sponsor funded the project partly on the strength of these people, reducing a key person's effort by 25% or more, or replacing them, generally requires prior approval.

Why it matters

A key person's departure or effort cut can trigger prior approval: an unreported change is a compliance gap.
