Pre-award

Just-in-Time (JIT)

NIH's request for certain information only after an application scores well enough to be considered for funding.

Rather than collecting everything up front, NIH asks for certain items: other support, IRB/IACUC approvals, certifications, just in time, once an application's score puts it in range for an award. It saves applicants from assembling documents for proposals that won't be funded.

A JIT request is encouraging but not a guarantee of funding; the information has to be accurate and current when submitted through eRA Commons.

Why it matters

A JIT request signals likely funding, but delays or errors in the response can hold up the award.
