Post-award
Expanded Authority
Sponsor-delegated authority letting institutions approve routine post-award actions themselves.
Many sponsors grant expanded authorities that let the recipient approve common post-award changes without asking first: a first no-cost extension, pre-award costs within 90 days, and most carryforward. NIH and NSF extend these broadly.
The delegation speeds administration but shifts responsibility to the institution to apply the rules correctly and document each decision.
Why it matters
Expanded authority saves time but puts the compliance burden on the institution for actions the sponsor no longer reviews.
