Cost Transfer
Moving a cost from one account to another after it posted: allowed, but scrutinized and time-limited.
A cost transfer reassigns an expense already charged to one project onto another. They're legitimate for correcting genuine errors, but frequent, late, or poorly documented transfers signal that charges aren't being managed in real time.
Most institutions require transfers within a set window, often 90 days, with a written justification explaining why the original charge was wrong and why the new account is correct.
Late or vaguely justified cost transfers are among the most common and heavily scrutinized audit findings.
