Cost Sharing (Matching)
The portion of project costs the institution covers rather than the sponsor: sometimes required, often discouraged.
Cost sharing (or matching) is any project cost not borne by the sponsor. It's 'mandatory' when a solicitation requires it as a condition of award, and 'voluntary committed' when an applicant pledges it without being asked: something most institutions discourage because, once committed, it must be tracked, documented, and reported like sponsor funds.
Commitments can take the form of effort, equipment, or third-party contributions, and unmet cost-sharing obligations can put an award, and future funding: at risk.
Every dollar of committed cost share is a dollar the institution must fund and document, so uncontrolled commitments quietly drain budgets.
