Tuition Remission
Graduate-student tuition paid by an award alongside a research assistantship: excluded from the F&A base.
When a graduate research assistant is paid from a grant, the award often also covers their tuition. Tuition remission is treated as a direct cost but is excluded from the Modified Total Direct Cost base, so it doesn't attract F&A.
Sponsors and institutions set specific rules about when remission can be charged and in what proportion to the student's effort, which makes it a careful budgeting item.
Tuition remission is often one of the largest non-salary lines on a budget and is excluded from F&A: getting it wrong skews the whole budget.
