Modular Budget
An NIH budget format that requests direct costs in $25,000 modules instead of itemized line detail.
For many NIH applications requesting $250,000 or less in direct costs per year, NIH uses a simplified 'modular' budget: applicants request funds in round $25,000 increments rather than a fully itemized budget. A personnel justification and, where needed, a consortium justification replace the usual line-item breakdown.
Larger requests, and most non-NIH sponsors, require a detailed budget that itemizes every category. Knowing which format a solicitation requires, and building to it: is a core pre-award task.
Choosing the wrong budget format can trigger a correction cycle and delay submission against a hard sponsor deadline.
